January 8, 2024, marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death.

He is renowned as one of the most famous travellers along the Silk Road from 1271 to 1289 and he is widely recognized for his extraordinary explorations.

Through a mission entrusted to his family, Marco Polo obtained a prestigious permit from Kublai Khan, the Chinese emperor, granting him freedom of movement and the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of China. What was initially planned as a one-year journey transformed into a 20-year expedition, spanning across a vast continent filled with opulence and fascinating customs waiting to be discovered.

Marco Polo’s stories about his travels in Asia were published as a book known as “The Million,” originally named “The description of the world”.

He recounted a beautiful myth that shocked the Western world based on his 17 years of experience in China. This travelogue is known as the "One of the Wonderful Books of the World" and is the first work in human history in which Westerners perceived the East. It opened the mysterious door of the East to the whole Europe.

His book reawakened Europe to the possibilities of international trade and expansion; it became a text that heavily influenced the age of discovery that dawned in Europe two centuries later.

This historical period was in fact marked by a significant increase in trade.
